How Sofwave Works

Sofwave focuses heated ultrasound energy into the skin at the mid-dermis level, which reduces discomfort and side effects that older ultrasound technologies have had. The heat is concentrated on the tissues just below the skin’s surface, and the top layer of skin isn’t affected at all. This heat creates a “heat injury” that jumpstarts the body’s healing response, which causes collagen to begin forming. This new collagen makes the skin firmer and more youthful.

Sofwave Treatment Details

No anesthesia is typically needed, as the treatment is very tolerable. Before treatment, your skin will be cleansed, and ultrasound gel will be applied to create a bond between the skin and the ultrasound transducer. The handheld applicator will then be used to apply the energy directly to the skin.

The Sofwave applicator is able to cover a larger area than past ultrasound devices, which helps the treatment go much more quickly (usually 15-30 minutes per session). The Sofwave applicator includes a cooling feature to offset the heat and keep the outer layer of skin safe.

Recovery

There is essentially no downtime with Sofwave, and patients can return to their regular day afterwards. The fact that it has a shallower depth than older ultrasound technologies also means that there is very mild (if any) bruising, ulceration, or hyperpigmentation.

Results

Early results are frequently seen as soon as one week following treatment. However, the collagen regeneration process takes up to 12 weeks for visible results to become apparent, with your appearance looking better and better over the months. Sofwave results are not permanent, and one-year maintenance treatments are recommended.

Sofwave FAQs

Can Sofwave be combined with injectables like BOTOX or dermal fillers?

Yes. Sofwave is often paired with BOTOX or dermal fillers as part of a broader treatment plan, since it addresses skin tightening while injectables target volume and movement.

How is Sofwave different from Morpheus8 or ThermiTight?

Sofwave uses ultrasound energy to heat the mid-dermis, while Morpheus8 and ThermiTight use radiofrequency energy delivered through microneedles or a probe. Dr. Bloom can help determine which technology best matches your skin concerns.

Can Sofwave treat the neck as well as the face?

Yes. Sofwave is FDA-cleared to treat the neck and area beneath the chin in addition to the face.

What are the risks or side effects of Sofwave?

Sofwave is considered very safe, though some patients experience mild redness or a warm sensation right after treatment that typically fades within a few hours.

Am I too young or too old for Sofwave?

Sofwave is generally recommended for patients 30 and older with mild to moderate skin laxity. Patients with more significant sagging may be better suited to a surgical option like a facelift or neck lift.

Will Sofwave replace the need for a facelift or neck lift?

No. Sofwave is designed for patients with mild to moderate laxity and cannot achieve the same degree of lift and tightening as a surgical procedure. Dr. Bloom can help you determine which option fits your goals.

Is there anything I should avoid before or after treatment?

Patients are generally advised to avoid sun exposure and certain skincare actives, such as retinol, for a short period before and after treatment. Our team will provide specific instructions during your consultation.
